PADI Announces Commitment to Rebreather Training

PADI, the world’s largest diver training organisation has announced that PADI will be launching rebreather training for closed circuit rebreathers (CCRs) in 2011.

Mark Caney, Director, Rebreather Technologies in PADI’s Technical Diving Division, today announced that PADI is planning to introduce its first rebreather courses to include closed circuit rebreathers next year.

PADI has had limited training for semiclosed rebreathers for some time, but the step into the launch of training for CCRs shows a recognition that these products are now ready for playing an important role, if not in the mainstream, on the edges of the mainstream.

Caney said that PADI will produce a range of rebreather courses covering the needs of recreational and technical divers, and that the first courses will become available next year. They will be supported by the usual high quality educational materials that PADI is well-known for.

No announcement has been made of which rebreathers will be initially supported, but I woud guess that the Hollis Prism 2 and the Poseidon Discovery units that have recently been, or about to be, released would be strong candidates, as they are well supported units that support a range of diving from recreational to technical.

Rebreathers, and rebreather training, are not new. Until now, however, they have been rather niche due to their cost and complexity, as well as the limited support for rebreather supplies in many parts of the world. With PADI coming on board to support CCRs with its high quality training, I suspect that the tipping point is approaching when they become more mainstream.

With that said, I also don’t think CCRs will be replacing traditional open circuit scuba any time soon. Instead they will become a great option for some divers and some diving applications.

The Underwater Photographer by Martin Edge (4th Edition)

Somehow I missed the fact that the fourth edition of my favourite book on UW photography has been released.

TheUWPhotographer.jpg

The Underwater Photographer, Fourth Edition by Martin Edge is an amazing update of what was already an incredibly good book. Completely revised to completely focus on the digital age, this book is an important addition to every underwater photographer’s library. The book features an entirely new set of photos shot specifically for the edition.

Please read my review of the third edition of the Underwater Photographer by Martin Edge. I intend to update this review, but will completely read the new edition from cover-to-cover first.

My only initial request is for an Amazon Kindle version of the book. I am trying to cut back on clutter and do a bit for the environment, and am being very selective in purchasing printed books. An ebook version would also be excellent for dive travel.

Gorgonians at Uepi Point

Gorgonians at Uepi Point
Originally uploaded by BlueBeyond

This image was made at a magical dive site called Uepi Point. Literally 2 minutes from the pier at Uepi Island, this site is at a point where a channel between Uepi and the adjacent island meets “The Slot” – a 3000m drop off into the open ocean.

At this site there is a point at 30m where you sit on the edge of the wall, and where you regularly see pelagic creatures coming up from the deep.

I find that every dive destination has some feature that captures me as the outstanding thing of the location.

For Uepi Island diving in general, and sites like Uepi Point in particular it was definitely the abundance and size of gorgonians.

Uepi Island Palms

Uepi Island Palms, originally uploaded by BlueBeyond.

Photo of the Day.

Starting today, my goal is to publish 1 new photo per day to my Flickr photostream and to this blog.

This image was made at Uepi Island Resort in September 2009 during a wonderful week of diving and relaxing we had there.

Its the first HDR image I’ve published, so I’d appreciate any feedback.

New Books by Jill Heinerth

Underwater explorer Jill Heinerth has in recent months released 2 fantastic new books.

As the first two books in her Jill’s Guide series, these books have both become features of my personal diving bookshelf.

Jills Guide: Digital Underwater PhotographyDigital Underwater Photography. A wonderful exploration of the science and the art of underwater photography, this is one of the great books that I would rate up there with the books by Martin Edge. Clearly illustrated with wonderful examples of Jill’s photographic work, and featuring anecdotes and stories of Jill’s own photographic experiences, this should certainly be a cornerstone of an underwater photographer’s library. I will probably make this book required reading for my Digital Undewater Photography Instructor Courses.

Jills Guide: The Essentials of Cave DivingThe second in the Jill’s Guide series was The Essentials of Cave Diving. Known as one of the world’s great explorers of underwater caves and waterways, Jill has a LOT to share for cave divers everywhere – newcomers and experienced cavers alike. With an exploration of accident analysis, equipment, techniques and underwater geology, as a non-cave diver (yet), I imagine this book would be a perfect aid to a training course. As a tec diver, there is so much valuable information in this book that I would recommend it to all my tec diving students.

I plan to review both these books in detail, so please keep an eye on the Diving Books & Media Reviews section of the BlueBeyond.com.au website.

Explorers Evening Announced as Part of OzTek’11

OzTek'11Shaping up to become one of the region’s most dynamic and talked about diving events, OZTeK’11 – to be held at Australian Technology Park, Sydney, over the weekend of the 12th – 13th March 2011 – will again showcase the very best that the world of diving has to offer.

Featuring an exhibition crammed with national and international exhibitors representing every facet of diving – from advanced technologies, equipment and training through to exotic travel opportunities – the two-day spectacular also provides an opportunity to meet, listen to, and learn from some of modern diving’s most acclaimed individuals; many of whom have pushed the diving envelope just that little bit further in their scientific quest to better understand the planet’s oceans and water systems, and whose achievements have earned for them membership in The Explorers Club.

Founded in New York in 1904, The Explorers Club has, for more than a century, played a leading role in the scientific exploration of land, sea, air and space.  Serving as a unifying force for explorers and scientists worldwide, its members have logged an impressive series of ‘firsts’, including:  the first to reach the North Pole; the first to reach the South Pole; the first to conquer Mount Everest; the first to reach the deepest point of the ocean depths; and the first to set foot upon the moon.

To be staged in Australian Technology Park’s main theatre on the evening of Saturday 12th March 2011, OZTeK and the Australia New Zealand Chapter of the Explorers Club (ANZEC) will – on Saturday 12th March – present an evening in the company of some of the world’s most accomplished underwater explorers; members of The Explorers Club whose adventures and achievements have helped push back the boundaries of knowledge.

Keeping alive the traits of vision, courage and tenacity that make diving exploration among the most compelling and relevant of high-risk enterprises, the evening promises a rare opportunity to meet, listen to – and be enthralled by – divers whose names may still be little known by the non-diving public, but whose exploits have become synonymous with adventure and excitement.

While full details of the evening’s programme will not be finalised until early 2011, speakers and presenters at the ‘Explorers Evening’ – a ticketed event open to all – already include: Kevin Denlay, Peter Fields, Jarrod Jablonski, Casey McKinlay, Jeff Maynard, and Steve Trewavas.

For further information about OZTeK’11 and its associated events and activities, check out the website at: www.diveoztek.com.au or contact the organiser by e-mail at: admin@diveoztek.com.au
